It is usually not detected until it has reached an advanced stage and being an aggressive disease, it makes it a very challenging types of cancer to treat.

RISK FACTORS:

  • Family History
  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Chronic Pancreatitis

PREVENTION STRATEGIES:

While one cannot change factors like age and family history, we can adopt several strategies to reduce the risk of pancreatic cancer

1. Quit Smoking

Smoking is one of the leading causes for pancreatic cancer. If you smoke, quitting is the most important step you can take to reduce your risk. Seek support from healthcare professionals, support groups, or smoking cessation programs to help you quit.

2. Maintain healthy body weight

Obesity is a significant risk factor for pancreatic cancer. Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise can significantly reduce your risk. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each week, such as brisk walking, cycling, or swimming.

3. Adopt a Healthy Diet

A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help reduce the risk of pancreatic cancer. Limit the intake of red and processed meats, sugary drinks, and high-fat foods. Incorporate foods that are high in antioxidants, such as berries, nuts, and leafy greens, which can help protect your cells from damage.

4. Limit Alcohol Consumption

Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to chronic pancreatitis and increase the risk of pancreatic cancer. Limiting your alcohol intake can help reduce this risk.

5. Manage Diabetes

If you have diabetes, managing your blood sugar levels effectively can help reduce your risk of pancreatic cancer. Follow your doctor’s recommendations for diet, exercise, and medication to keep your diabetes under control.

6. Stay Active

Regular physical activity not only helps maintain a healthy weight but also reduces the risk of many cancers. Aim for a mix of aerobic exercises, such as walking or jogging, and strength training exercises.

7. Monitor Your Health

Regular check-ups with your doctor can help detect any early signs of pancreatic cancer or other health issues. Most common presentation of pancreatic cancer be decreased appetite, weight loss or pain abdomen radiating to back. Also, if there is a strong family history of pancreatic cancer or other risk factors, discussing screening options with your doctor is necessary.

Screening may involve clinical assessment, blood investigation for some important cancer markers and also imaging assessment with tissue evaluation with needle test or biopsy to confirm diagnosis and decide treatment as per stage.

While it’s impossible to completely eliminate the risk of pancreatic cancer, adopting a healthy lifestyle can greatly decrease your chances. Remember, early detection and prompt medical attention are key components in managing your health and potentially mitigating risks associated with pancreatic cancer. Prioritize your well-being to pave the way for a healthier future.
