CyberKnife® S7™ FIM System

What is the CyberKnife® S7™ FIM Robotic Radio Surgery System?

CyberKnife® S7™ FIM Robotic Radio Surgery System is a non-invasive treatment for cancerous and non-cancerous tumors and other conditions where radiation therapy is indicated. The CyberKnife® S7™ FIM System uses cutting-edge robotics, advanced imaging and sophisticated software to deliver extremely precise, accurate radiation.

It treats tumours throughout the body, including the brain, lungs, spine, prostate, and abdomen. It can be an alternative to surgery for patients with inoperable or complex tumours. Even patients previously treated with radiation or with metastatic or recurrent cancers can receive CyberKnife® S7™ FIM treatment.

Why is it done?

Clinical Conditions treated by the CyberKnife® S7™ FIM:
Benign Brain Tumours

  • Acoustic Schwannoma
  • Non-acoustic Schwannoma
  • Pituitary Adenomas (functioning/ non-functioning)
  • Glomus Jugulare / Glomus tympanicum
  • Meningioma – Grade 1 (Residual/Recurrent)
  • Arteriovenous malformations (Deep seated/eloquent)
  • Symptomatic deep-seated cavernomas
  • Dural arteriovenous malformations

Malignant Brain Tumours

  • Brain metastasis (solitary / limited)

Functional Brain Indications

Neuralgias

  • Trigeminal Neuralgia
  • Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia
  • Cluster headaches

Tremors

  • Parkinson’s/Essential tremors

Lesional Epilepsy

  • Hypothalamic hamartomas
  • Mesial Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (MTLE)

Refractory Pain

  • Hypophysectomy

Recurrent benign spine tumours

  • Schwannoma
  • Meningioma
  • Glomus (type 2) Arteriovenous Malformations

Extracranial Malignancies

  • Lung Cancer
  • Liver Cancer
  • Pancreatic Cancer
  • Prostate Cancer
  • Spine Metastasis
  • Recurrent, Inoperable Head & Neck Cancer

What happens during the procedure?

Treatment takes place in a dedicated treatment room with a specially trained team. These treatment sessions are performed in an out-patient setting and does not require any incisions or anaesthesia. During the session, radiation beams are administered from various angles. Each beam lasts for approximately 10 to 15 seconds. During treatment, patients can breathe normally while the robot moves around the body to deliver radiation precisely to the tumour.

How long will it take?

CyberKnife® S7™ FIM treatments are usually performed in 1 to 5 sessions. The treatment duration generally ranges from 15 to 90 minutes, depending on the tumour to treat.

What happens after the procedure?

As the treatment sessions does not require anaesthesia and is a non- invasive outpatient procedure, most of the patients can continue with daily activities over the course of treatment. After treatment is over, a follow-up visit will be scheduled to assess the patient’s response and address any side effects, should they occur.

Apollo expertise in the procedure

Apollo Cancer Centre, Chennai has introduced South Asia’s first CyberKnife, CyberKnife® S7™ FIM Robotic Radio Surgery System, offering revolutionary treatment modality of cancerous and non-cancerous tumors. The CyberKnife® System has shown to deliver excellent cancer control with reduced risk of side effects and successful treatment of cancer patients. Apollo Cancer Centre has an expert team of specialists who are adept at using Cyberknife technology for the over 15 years and treated over 3,000 cases.

FAQs

What to expect before the treatment?
The treatment process begins with a consultation between the patient, radiation oncologist and medical care team to decide the best treatment option. The CyberKnife® S7™ FIM System team will conduct a series of scans necessary to build a precise treatment plan. Depending on tumour location, preparation may require additional accessories to make treatment more comfortable. Sometimes treatment may require the placement of fiducials, or markers, to pinpoint the tumour’s exact location.

How will patients be benefited by the CyberKnife® S7™ FIM Robotic Radio Surgery System?

  • Precise, effective and targeted treatment enabling a faster return to everyday life.
  • Provides patient with improved quality of life.
  • Lesser treatment sessions.
  • Precisely treats almost any Tumor/Cancer indication and complexity.
  • Excellent long-term Cancer control through a non-surgical, non-invasive/painless outpatient procedure.
  • Minimal dose to healthy tissues with fewer side effects.
  • Greater patient comfort.
  • Lower risk of recurrence.

Why is CyberKnife® S7™ FIM Robotic Radio Surgery System a superior technology?
The CyberKnife® S7™ FIM System is the only radiation delivery system which features a radiation delivery device, called a linear accelerator, directly mounted on a robot to deliver the high-energy X-rays or photons used in radiation therapy.

It uses real-time image guidance and a robot to deliver the dose from thousands of beam angles, setting a new standard for delivery precision anywhere in the body and enabling stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) treatments for the full range of indications. The robot moves and bends around the patient, significantly expanding the possible positions to concentrate radiation to the tumour while minimising damage to surrounding healthy tissue.

The CyberKnife® S7™ FIM System uses Synchrony® to precisely synchronise and adapt treatment delivery with patient and tumour motion in real time, allowing patients to breathe normally and remain comfortable during treatments. This synchronisation can precisely attack tumours while giving your doctor the confidence to aggressively attack tumours while minimising dose to healthy tissue, which may help minimise side effects.
