    About The Patient And Condition

A 45-year-old gentleman presented to Apollomedics Super Speciality Hospital, Lucknow, with neck pain, severe Rt U/L pain and shoulder weakness.

    Case Scenario

The MRI report revealed a large Rt Side disc prolapse with root compression at C5/6 level with disc changes at adjacent levels. After a detailed discussion on the condition and treatment required, the patient opted for surgical decompression with the insistence that neck mobility must be maintained. Surgery was performed next day, anterior cervical discectomy and a motion pressuring artificial disc replacement was performed. Patient’s pain subsided and he was discharged home on 3rd POD. The usual treatment in such cases involves fusion surgery after the discectomy, with bone/cage/plate fixation and immobilization in collar for 2-3 months. This fusion surgery results in loss of neck movement at that level. In the long term, there is development of ALD (Adjacent Level Disease). Preserving motion at the discectomy level addresses both these concerns. We used the latest model of a Swiss manufactured artificial Disc, which provides controlled motion in all six degrees with excellent fitment and lodging system to prevent displacement.

    World-wide Scenario

Artificial cervical disc replacement surgery is a preferred option worldwide in selected single level disc prolapse but is used infrequently due to financial considerations and suitable patient selection. Thus this surgery is done in only around 1% cases worldwide.
