What is Hydrocele?
Hydrocele is a condition in which fluid accumulates in the sac present around the testicles leading to swelling in the scrotum (sac of skin that holds testicles). It can be unilateral (swelling on one side) or bilateral (selling on both sides) based on the scrotal swelling on one or both sides.
Swelling in the scrotum is the characteristic of hydrocele. Usually, these are painless, but, older boys and adult men may experience pain or discomfort if there is inflammation or injury.
Hydrocele, if untreated, may become too large, painful, and uncomfortable.
Diagnosis of Hydrocele
Hydrocele is diagnosed based on a physical exam and also an imaging test such as ultrasound. During the physical examination, the doctor may check for signs of inflammation. Transillumination, a test in which a bright light is used to examine the affected organ is also performed. It can show clear fluid present around the testicle.
Surgery
There are no medications available to treat a hydrocele. Congenital hydrocele may resolve on its own within six to 12 months. However, if it doesn’t go away, your doctor may recommend surgery and it is completely curable with surgery.
During the surgery, the fluid from the sac is drained and repaired by eversion/excision under general anesthesia. This procedure is called hydrocelectomy. The procedure may take around 30 to 40 minutes and you are likely to go home the same day if your vitals are stable.
