Diet and Depression
Nutrition plays crucial role in maintaining physical and mental health. Though there is no specific diet proven to treat depression, optimum nutrition can play a role in preventing depression caused or worsened by poor physical health.
Mental health causes emotional eating, binging or grazing or skipping meals. There is lack of vital nutrients. There is limited approach and health is often neglected. Chances to addict to stimulants and alcohol, smoking can trigger other health issues and sleep disorder.
Healthy foods that are rich in antioxidants attributes to cellular health prevents anti-ageing, protects vital organs such as heart, brain and skin and hair. They inhibit the production of free radicals which are responsible for cellular damage. Adopting healthy and balanced diet can also improve symptoms of depression.
Healthy diet may include:
- Carbohydrates– whole grains & millets such as jowar, bajra , ragi, quinoa, and brown rice
- Protein – Dairy – reduced fat yoghurt, milk, dairy – reduced fat yoghurt, milk, cheese
- Healthy fats are essential in limited amount- nuts & oilseeds, along with small amount of filtered or pressed oil.
- Vitamins & minerals- Whole grains & millets, vegetables & fruits. Include colorful and seasonal varieties
- Fluids- Water is best medium to detox, maintain fluid and electrolytes and pH balance
However, nutrition requirements vary for each individual, in terms of caloric requirements based on age, health condition. So, consult Clinical Dietitian who can assist in diet to meet your nutritional needs depending on your health condition.
