COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, is a lung condition that makes it difficult to breathe. It is caused by damage to the lungs, usually from smoking or exposure to air pollution. COPD symptoms can worsen in the winter, due to cold temperatures and dry air.
10 tips for dealing with COPD in the winter
- Get vaccinated. The flu and pneumonia can be serious complications of COPD. Getting vaccinated against these illnesses can help to protect you.
- Stay indoors as much as possible. Cold air can trigger COPD symptoms. If you must go outside, bundle up in warm clothes, wear a scarf over your mouth and nose, and limit your time outdoors.
- Use a humidifier or take hot showers. Dry air can also irritate your lungs. Using a humidifier or taking hot showers can help to add moisture to the air.
- Drink plenty of fluids. Staying hydrated is important for everyone, but it is especially important for people with COPD. Fluids help to thin mucus and make it easier to cough up.
- Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke. Smoking is the leading cause of COPD, and secondhand smoke can also worsen symptoms.
- Have a plan in place for flare-ups. If you have a history of COPD flare-ups, it is important to have a plan in place for what to do if you experience one. This may include having medications on hand and knowing when to seek medical attention.
- Talk to your doctor & take medications as prescribed. Your doctor can help you to develop a treatment plan for your COPD and can provide you with additional tips for managing your symptoms in the winter.
- Be aware of your triggers. Knowing what triggers your COPD symptoms can help you to avoid them.
- Practice good breathing techniques. There are a number of breathing techniques that can help to improve lung function.
- Stay active. Exercise can help to improve your overall health and can make it easier to breathe.
- Eat a healthy diet. A healthy diet can help to boost your immune system and make you more resilient to illness.
By following these tips, you can help to manage your COPD and stay healthy in the winter.
