Laryngoscopy is a procedure to visualize the larynx or the vocal cords (voice box) inside and/or the back of the throat to diagnose or treat the cause of any symptoms related to the same. It is done by an ENT (Ear Nose Throat) doctor or specialist with the help of a laryngoscope-a long hand-held device with a tiny camera attached at its tip to help visualize the parts of the throat. Laryngoscopy is broadly categorized into direct and indirect laryngoscopy.
An individual can undergo a laryngoscopy in the following scenarios:
- Diagnosis of a medical condition: Doctors may do laryngoscopy to help find the cause of symptoms like difficulty in speaking, voice production, breathing, swallowing, hearing, obstruction or growth in the throat.
- Collection of tissue through biopsy: Biopsy is the collection of tissue through specialized instruments to confirm the presence of cancer or other medical conditions. A laryngoscope (device used for laryngoscopy) can be used as a guide by the doctor to find the tissue in question and take appropriate samples for further examination.
- As a guide for treatment procedures: Laryngoscopy also helps to remove growths or lesions in the throat by guiding the doctor to the exact location as well as defining the boundaries of the growth for complete removal.
