Vertigo is a sensation of spinning or moving when you are not actually moving. It is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and imbalance. Vertigo can be caused by a variety of problems, including:
- Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV): This is the most common cause of vertigo. It is caused by a problem with the inner ear.
- Labyrinthitis: This is an inflammation of the inner ear.
- Vestibular neuritis: This is an inflammation of the vestibular nerve, which sends signals from the inner ear to the brain.
- Meniere’s disease: This is a condition that affects the inner ear and can cause vertigo, hearing loss, and ringing in the ears.
- Migraine: Migraine headaches can sometimes cause vertigo.
- Stroke: Stroke can cause vertigo if it affects the part of the brain that controls balance.
- Medications: Some medications, such as certain antibiotics and chemotherapy drugs, can cause vertigo as a side effect.
To diagnose vertigo, your doctor will take a history of your symptoms and perform a physical examination. They may also order tests, such as an audiogram, electronystagmography (ENG), or videonystagmography (VNG), to assess your hearing and balance.
Vertigo can be a frustrating and debilitating condition, but it is important to remember that it is usually treatable. If you are experiencing vertigo, see your doctor to get a diagnosis and treatment.
