There are a variety of diseases and conditions that can affect the breasts, both benign (non-cancerous) and malignant (cancerous). Here are some of the most common ones:
BENIGN (NON-CANCEROUS)
- Breast lumps: These are lumps in the breast that are not cancerous, like fibroadenomas
- Fibrocystic breasts: This is a condition that causes the breasts to feel lumpy and sometimes causes pain. It is often caused by hormonal changes.
- Mastitis: This is an infection of the breast tissue that can cause pain, redness, swelling, and fever. It is most common in women who are breastfeeding, but it can also occur in women who are not breastfeeding.
- Nipple discharge: This is a discharge from the nipple that can be clear, milky, green, yellow, or bloody. Nipple discharge can be caused by a variety of things, including breastfeeding, hormonal changes, and certain medications. If you have nipple discharge, it is important to see a doctor to rule out any underlying medical conditions.
MALIGNANT (CANCEROUS)
- Breast cancer: Breast cancer occurs when cells in the breast tissue grow abnormally and uncontrollably. There are many different types of breast cancer, and the treatment options vary depending on the type and stage of the cancer.
- Presentation: Painless lump, nipple discharge, redness thickening of the skin
These are just a few of the many diseases and conditions that can affect the breasts. If you experience any changes in your breasts, it is important to see a doctor to get a diagnosis and discuss treatment options.
