Cancer is a disease caused by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells in the body. While cancer can affect anyone, certain types of cancer are more common in men than in women. Here are some of the most common cancers that affect men:
- Head and neck cancers: Lip and mouth cancers form the majority of the head and neck cancers in men according to the latest Globocan data on the incidence of cancers in males and females. Alcohol and tobacco consumption have been attributed to be the major causes of head and neck cancers in men. Sympoms include a lump or swelling in the neck, mouth or sore throat and difficulty in swallowing.
- Lung cancer: Being the second most common cancer in men, lung cancer is often associated with smoking. Non-smokers can also develop lung cancer in the long run. Symptoms may include a persistent cough, chest pain, and difficulty breathing.
- Stomach cancer: According to a recent research, men are twice as likely as women to develop stomach cancer. Initial symptoms may mimick other less common conditions affecting the stomach and include indigestion, bloating or burping, and persistent stomach pain.
- Colorectal cancer: This cancer affects the colon and rectum and is the third most common cancer in men. Symptoms may include abdominal pain, changes in bowel habits, and rectal bleeding.
- Esophagus cancer: Cancer of the esophagus is found to be common in men than in women. This has been again attributed to consumption of alcohol and smoking of cigarettes. The most predominant symptom is difficulty in swallowing known as dysphagia.
Other common cancers in men include bladder cancer, skin cancer, kidney cancer, liver cancer, and pancreatic cancer. It’s important to note that early detection and treatment are key to improving the chances of survival for any type of cancer. Men should talk to their healthcare provider about appropriate cancer screenings and any symptoms they may be experiencing.
