Epilepsy or commonly known as “Fits”, has affected more than 10 million people in India. Even though epilepsy has now become a common condition, it is still a stigma (not accepted socially) for people living with epilepsy (PWE). Most individuals look at Epilepsy as a condition that can spread by touch, which is wrong. PWE are isolated from social gatherings or are not able to lead a normal life due to fear of developing fits when surrounded by people. Epilepsy is not a disease but a condition that can be easily managed. So, as an individual what can we do to help people living with epilepsy to be accepted socially?
How can we help people with epilepsy?
- As a family member: Recognize the feelings of your loved one suffering from epilepsy. Talk to them about the way they feel in everyday situations. Talk to other friends and family members about how they can help to recognize early signs of a fit and ways to deal with them effectively. Encourage them to take timely and appropriate treatment under expert care.
- As a stranger: Call for help and stay with the PWE during an ongoing fit episode. Bring them to or ensure their safety until help arrives. One can also initiate first aid measures like turning the individual on their side to keep their airway clear.
- As a friend: Stay in constant touch through calls, messages, random meetings, lunch or dinner plans, etc. Stay calm during an ongoing fit episode. Know the factors that can trigger a fit and avoid those factors whenever possible.
- As a patient: Avoid unsupervised risky activities. It is important to understand that it is not a disease but a condition where your brain has tendency to throw electrical discharges. You can avoid trigger of seizures by maintaining daily schedule, proper sleep and regular medications.
One can help people with epilepsy by staying in touch, recognizing signs of a fit, ensuring the safety of the individual at all times, and encouraging them to take appropriate treatment.
Contribute through acceptance!
