Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that causes seizures. Seizures are brief episodes of abnormal brain activity that can cause a variety of symptoms, including changes in consciousness, movement, sensation, or behavior. Epilepsy can affect people of all ages, but it is most common in children and older adults.
If you have a child with epilepsy, there are a few things you can do to help them manage their condition and live a normal, healthy life. Here are some do’s and don’ts:
Do:
- Learn as much as you can about epilepsy. The more you know, the better equipped you will be to help your child. Talk to your doctor, read books and articles, and join support groups for parents of children with epilepsy.
- Make sure your child takes their medication as prescribed. Epilepsy medications can be very effective in controlling seizures, but it is important to take them as directed by your doctor. Skipping or missing doses can increase the risk of seizures.
- Establish a regular routine for your child. This includes regular sleep and mealtimes. A regular routine can help to reduce stress and triggers for seizures.
- Help your child to live a normal, active life. Children with epilepsy can participate in most activities that other children enjoy. However, it is important to supervise your child closely and to take precautions to reduce the risk of injury during a seizure.
Don’t:
- Panic if your child has a seizure. Stay calm and follow the steps in your seizure action plan.
- Restrain your child during a seizure. This can actually harm them.
- Put anything in your child’s mouth during a seizure. This can block their airway.
- Give your child food or drink until they are fully awake and alert.
- Try to diagnose or treat your child’s epilepsy on your own. Always consult with your doctor.
Living with epilepsy can be challenging, but it is important to remember that you are not alone. There are many resources available to help you and your child manage their epilepsy and live a normal, healthy life.
