Reconstructive urology is a surgical specialty that focuses on the repair and reconstruction of the urinary tract and male reproductive system including repair of urethral strictures, ureteral strictures, ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO), urinary tract incontinence and fistulae.
Which conditions do reconstructive urologists treat?
- Birth defects: Birth defects of the urinary tract and male reproductive system are relatively common. Examples include hypospadias, epispadias, etc. Reconstructive urologists can repair these defects to improve function and quality of life.
- Injuries: Injuries to the urinary tract and male reproductive system can occur from accidents, sports, or surgery. Reconstructive urologists can repair these injuries to restore function and prevent complications.
- Cancer: Cancer of the urinary tract and male reproductive system can require surgery to remove the tumor and reconstruct the affected area. Reconstructive urologists can work with oncologists to provide comprehensive cancer care.
- Secondary or acquired conditions: Urethral strictures, ureteral strictures, ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO), urinary tract incontinence and fistulae caused as a result of post operative complications.
- Other conditions: Reconstructive urologists also treat a variety of other conditions, such as enlarged prostate, kidney stones, and urinary incontinence.
Reconstructive urology surgery can be performed using a variety of techniques, including open surgery, minimally invasive surgery, and robotic surgery. The best approach for each patient will depend on the individual condition and the patient’s overall health.
Common reconstructive urology procedures
- Hypospadias repair: Hypospadias is a birth defect in which the urethral opening is located on the underside of the penis instead of at the tip. Hypospadias repair surgery is performed to correct this defect and improve urinary function.
- Epispadias repair: Epispadias is a birth defect in which the urethral opening is located on the topside of the penis (in males) or clitoris (in females). Epispadias repair surgery is performed to correct this defect and improve urinary function.
- Ureteral reimplantation: Ureteral reimplantation is a surgery to correct a condition in which the ureter (the tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder) is inserted into the bladder in an abnormal way. This can lead to urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and other problems.
- Pyeloplasty: Pyeloplasty is a reconstructive urology procedure that is used to repair a blockage or narrowing of the ureteropelvic junction (UPJ), which is the point where the ureter (the tube that drains urine from the kidney to the bladder) connects to the kidney.
- Prostatectomy: Prostatectomy is a surgery to remove the prostate gland. This surgery is often performed to treat prostate cancer, but it can also be used to treat enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia).
Reconstructive urological procedures are done through open surgical approach and minimally invasive approach. A minimally invasive approach involves laparoscopic and robotically assisted procedures.
Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai offers all forms of surgical approaches, robotically assisted surgery being the most beneficial for most individuals as it offers faster recovery, minimal pain and reduced risk of post-operative complications.
