Mitral valve regurgitation (MR) is a condition in which the heart’s mitral valve doesn’t close tightly, which allows blood to flow backward in the heart. It causes breathlessness, palpitation, fatigue and pedal oedema. It is most often classified as primary degenerative (age-related) and secondary functional types. If it is left untreated, the risk of mortality (death) and morbidity (chronic disease) is high.
Surgical Mitral valve replacement is the conventional treatment for this condition. The risk of surgery, risk of anesthesia, low ejection fraction (the amount of blood pumped by the heart), long term anticoagulants and other comorbid conditions can increase the risks associated with surgery.
Mitra Clip procedure- A novel non-surgical solution
Mitra clip procedure is the non-surgical alternative to surgery and can be done for both primary-degenerative severe MR and secondary functional severe MR.
- What happens during the procedure?
The procedure is done in a well-equipped Cath lab where catheters are inserted in the groin and directed towards the leaky valve. The doctors grasp both the leaflets (openings) of the valve and insert the Mitra clip. Upon completion of the procedure, the patient is extubated (taken off the ventilator) on the procedure table itself and is discharged within 24-48 hours depending on the stability of the patient.
- What happens after the procedure?
Once the patient has been moved to the wardroom, he/she will be guided on a complete cardiac rehabilitation program including taking care of personal hygiene, daily activities, walking, functional and strength training by a rehab specialist to help the patient get back to his/her routine early. It is recommended to have regular follow-up with the doctor for adequate monitoring of the heart and other important parameters.
What are the benefits of Mitra Clip procedure?
- Minimally invasive procedure
- Reduced risk of complications
- Shorter stay in the hospital
- Quick recovery and return to activities of daily living
- Saves lives and improves quality of life
