Stent Positioning Assistance System (SPAS) is an innovative device that allows for precise placement of coronary artery stents in difficult percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI).
How does SPAS work?
Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat blockages in the coronary arteries. During PTCA, a catheter is inserted into the artery and a balloon is inflated to widen the blockage. A stent, a mesh-like tube, may then be inserted to keep the artery open. SPAS uses a combination of imaging and navigation technology to track the position of the coronary stent and guide it into place. This can help to improve the accuracy of stent placement and reduce the risk of complications.
SPAS has been shown to be effective in improving the accuracy of stent placement. In a study of patients with coronary artery disease, SPAS was found to reduce the rate of stent misplacement by 50%. SPAS also reduced the risk of other complications, such as vessel perforation and dissection.
The use of SPAS is still relatively new, but it is becoming increasingly popular. Our cardiac team has pioneered the use of SPAS in India in a patient with complex coronary artery occlusion.
Here are some of the benefits of using SPAS in PTCA:
- Improved accuracy of stent placement: SPAS can help to ensure that the stent is placed in the correct position, which can reduce the risk of complications.
- Reduced risk of complications: SPAS can help to reduce the risk of complications such as vessel perforation and dissection.
- Faster procedure time: SPAS can help to make the procedure time shorter, which can be beneficial for patients who are at risk of complications.
- Improved patient outcomes: The use of SPAS has been shown to improve patient outcomes, such as reduced risk of death and heart attack.
If you or your loved one has been advised an angioplasty, talk to your doctor about its complexity and whether SPAS is right for you. SPAS may be a good option for you if you have complex coronary artery disease or if you have had previous angioplasty procedures.
