Innovative Scarless Surgery Performed at Apollo Multispeciality Hospitals for Early Rectal Cancer

May 30, 2024 – Apollo Multispeciality Hospitals recently showcased its commitment to advanced medical treatments by successfully performing a novel scarless surgery for rectal cancer on an 81-year-old female patient. The patient, who also suffered from chronic kidney failure and was experiencing blood loss through stool, was diagnosed with early-stage rectal cancer.

The medical team opted for Transanal Minimal Invasive Surgery (TAMIS), a cutting-edge technique that involves no abdominal incisions. Instead, the tumor was resected through the anal canal using a specialized port and instruments. The procedure, which was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Sumit Gulati, was completed painlessly. Remarkably, the patient was able to consume a diet within 24 hours post-surgery and was discharged just 48 hours later. Her biopsy report confirmed a T1 cancer with free margins, indicating that she was cancer-free and would not require chemotherapy.

Dr. Gulati highlighted the revolutionary potential of this scarless approach, particularly for patients at high risk for traditional abdominal surgery. Dr. Gulati highlighted the revolutionary potential of this scarless approach, particularly for patients at high risk for traditional abdominal surgery. Dr. Supriyo Ghatak noted that “TAMIS is well accepted by patients as there is no cut in the skin, and there is no pain. This advanced technique is available only at select centers in India and globally, underscoring Apollo Multispeciality Hospitals’ position at the forefront of medical innovation”.
