Management of risk factors is the most readily applicable and affordable part of our knowledge, but prevention is neglected, and most environments are inhospitable to healthy living.” TIA stands for “transient ischemic attack. “Transient ischemic attacks are episodes in which a person has the disabilities that last for a short time due to transient disruption of functions of a part of brain but without any sign of stroke on brain scans such as MRI or CT. Symptoms of a TIA usually last between a few minutes and a few hours. A person may have one or many TIAs. People recover completely from the symptoms of a TIA.
Even though TIAs do not cause lasting symptoms, they are serious. If you have a TIA, you are at high risk of having a stroke. It’s important that you see a doctor and take steps to prevent that from happening. Do not ignore the symptoms of a stroke even if they go away! A TIA is a warning sign that a person is at high risk for a stroke. As high as 8% of such patients may suffer from a major stroke in next 48 hours. Stroke is the leading cause of death and the major cause of disability around the world. Every other second, someone suffers a stroke regardless of age or gender. Despite this, many people affected by stroke are unable to access treatment and rehabilitation due to lack of awareness on the same. Moreover, time is of paramount importance in case of stroke. In case the patient is brought to the hospital within 3-4 hours of suffering a stroke, the chances of survival are higher. This is because in stroke, 32,000 brain cells are damaged every second, hence every second counts.
Eighty per cent of strokes are caused by a blood clot in the brain and usually do not hurt, although some do. Stroke cuts off oxygen to a part of the brain. Brain cells begin to die but this is usually not painful. Hence people generally tend to ignore the symptoms of stroke. Approximately 70% of patients do not correctly recognize their TIA or minor stroke, 30% delay seeking medical attention for more than 24 hours, regardless of age, sex, social class, or educational level and approximately 30% of early recurrent strokes occur before seeking attention. Without more effective public education of all demographic groups, the full potential of acute prevention will not be realized.
Clot Bursting Therapy:
Regardless of a patient’s age, or severity of stroke, prompt treatment with a clot-bursting drug limited stroke-related disability and death. Tissue plasminogen activator or tPA is the only approved U.S. FDA treatment for acute stroke caused by a blood clot and this treatment can only be given intravenously up to 4.5 hours of stroke onset to be effective. Sooner this drug is administered after the onset of stroke the greater is the benefit. However this drug can only be given in centers, which can provide hyper acute stroke services and has multidisciplinary staff trained in delivering acute treatment.
Bridging Technology:
Endovascular Procedures : Another treatment option is an endovascular procedure in which specially trained consultant remove the blood clot by sending a catheter to the site of the blocked blood vessel in the brain. Sometimes these procedures involve tPA being administered directly into the blood clot (called intra-arterial treatment) to help dissolve the blockage. In other procedures, the doctor may attempt to remove the clot. Researchers are still conducting research to determine the best clinical protocols for endovascular procedures.
