What Are Varicose Veins?

  • Varicose veins are swollen, enlarged, and twisted veins that usually appear blue or dark purple. They commonly form on the legs, either on the inside of the leg or behind the knee.
  • Varicose veins develop when the small valves in the veins malfunction. In healthy veins, these valves ensure smooth blood flow to the heart and prevent backflow by opening and closing.
  • Varicose leg veins can affect your appearance, but the main concern should be their potential to cause serious complications.
  • Symptoms of varicose veins include:
    • Legs that ache, feel heavy, and are uncomfortable
    • Feet and ankles that are swollen
    • Muscle cramps in the legs, especially at night
    • Dry, itchy, and thin skin over the affected vein

Advanced Treatments for Varicose Veins

Endovenous Therapies

Endovenous therapy is a minimally invasive, ultrasound-guided procedure used to treat varicose veins. There are three types of endovenous therapies.

Logo
Laser
  • Endovenous laser varicose vein surgery employs laser heat to diminish varicose veins.
  • The procedure involves closing and shrinking the varicose vein, creating scar tissue within the vessel, which effectively seals it off.
  • As a result, blood is redirected through nearby veins.

Radiofrequency Ablation
  • Endovenous radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive procedure for treating varicose veins using radiofrequency (RF) energy.
  • A vein specialist inserts a catheter into the affected vein to apply consistent and uniform heat. This causes the collagen in the vein walls to contract, leading to their closure. Once sealed, blood naturally reroutes to healthier veins.
  • The treated vein transforms into fibrous tissue and eventually gets absorbed into surrounding tissue over time.

Glue
  • Endovenous glue treatment is a procedure designed to permanently close varicose veins, causing them to collapse and turn into an invisible thread of scar tissue under the skin.
  • This method involves inserting a catheter into the vein (typically below the knee) and guiding it to the top near the groyne. As the catheter is pulled back, a small amount of glue is injected, holding the vein closed for 30 seconds while the glue sets. Only a small anaesthesia injection is required at the insertion point.

Sclerotherapy

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a widely used treatment to improve the appearance of varicose and spider veins on the legs. It involves injecting a solution into the affected vein using a needle. This solution causes the vein to scar and collapse, redirecting blood flow to healthier veins.

How Does it Work?

The scarring from the sclerotherapy solution forces blood to move through healthier veins. The treated vein eventually collapses and fades. This process can take a few weeks, but full results may take a month or more.

Post-Treatment and Results

After sclerotherapy, veins usually fade within a few weeks, though they may not disappear completely. Some veins may require more than one treatment session for optimal results.

FAQs

Nearly all patients with varicose veins are good candidates for endovenous therapy. For those who aren't, typically due to small recurrent veins after previous surgery, foam sclerotherapy is an effective alternative.

Laser or radiofrequency ablation treatments usually take 30 to 60 minutes, including preparation and post-procedure examination. Unlike traditional surgical stripping, ablation typically allows patients to return to work or normal activities the next day.

Ablation reduces or eliminates symptoms like leg heaviness, pain, and itching associated with varicose veins. Treating varicose veins also reduces the risk of complications such as blood clots and ulcers that can occur if left untreated.

Vein glue is the latest advancement in varicose vein treatment involving 'VenaSeal' (cyanoacrylate), a medical adhesive that effectively closes and seals the defective vein, preventing its further use.

  • VenaSeal is safer without requiring nerve blockage or extensive anaesthesia.
  • No need for pre-procedure drugs with VenaSeal.
  • Patients can resume normal activities immediately after.
  • Avoids risks like skin burns or nerve damage seen in laser or radiofrequency treatments.
  • Pain-free treatment means no post-procedure pain medications or stockings are required.
  • Typically takes only 15 minutes with experienced practitioners.

Treating large varicose veins differs from treating thread veins. 'Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy' involves using a foamed sclerosant to safely and effectively treat large varicose veins, offering long-term relief from problematic veins.

The number of treatments needed varies depending on the individual, but typically 2-4 sessions are necessary to achieve optimal results. For patients with fewer veins, 1-2 sessions may suffice, while more extensive or numerous veins may require additional treatments.
