Successful Treatment for Complicated Chronic Liver Disease with Open Splenectomy Surgery

Mr Mahender, husband of Mrs Lalithama, a 46-year-old who has courageously battled Chronic Liver Disease for the past 7 to 8 years. After struggling to find a proper diagnosis elsewhere, they have now found hope under the attentive care of Dr Koyyoda Prashanth, an experienced surgical gastroenterologist, HPB and advanced laparoscopic surgeon at Apollo Hospital, Jubilee Hills

Dr Prashanth elaborates on the care provided to Mrs Lalithama, who suffers from a rare case of Non-Cirrhotic Portal Fibrosis (NCPF) related chronic liver disease with severe portal hypertension, varices, and a history of gastrointestinal bleeding. Additionally, she presents with massive splenomegaly leading to severe hypersplenism and haematological manifestations. Further complicating matters, she has a detected large splenic artery aneurysm.

To address these complexities, Dr Prashanth performed an open splenectomy, splenic artery ligation in continuity, devascularization of the stomach and oesophagus, and a liver biopsy. The biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of NCPF-related liver disease, with the spleen exhibiting congestive splenomegaly postoperatively.

Remarkably, during the surgery, there was minimal blood loss, and Mrs. Lalithama’s blood parameters normalised postoperatively. The couple is highly satisfied with the successful outcomes of the surgery and extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Prashanth and the entire team for their exceptional care and support.
