Dr P V Naresh, an esteemed cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon at Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad explains about the case of Mr Abbas, 69 years old from Iraq who suffered a severe heart attack. Due to a delay in his diagnosis, Mr Abbas did not receive timely treatment at his home country. His angiogram revealed severe diffuse disease in his arteries, and the left side of his heart had become damaged and ballooned, causing significant breathlessness and difficulty in walking.
After evaluating Mr Abbas, Dr Naresh recommended coronary artery bypass surgery along with an innovative left ventricular reconstruction surgery, which involves reshaping the damaged part of the heart to its normal form. The surgery was successful, and the patient was discharged within a week. Post-operative MRIs showed a significant improvement in his ejection fraction, which increased from 23% to 39%. Dr Naresh also demonstrates the heart’s function using before and after MRI films, highlighting the improvement.
