Ms. Arpitha Karmakar recounts her uncle Mr. Nalakumar Karmakar’s experience at Apollo Hospitals. Mr. Nalakumar had previously suffered a stroke and was admitted to a hospital where he recovered. However, tests revealed that both his kidneys were damaged due to complications, requiring continuous dialysis. Despite undergoing 5-6 dialysis sessions, his condition did not improve. After researching online, they decided to seek treatment at Apollo Hospitals in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad.
They consulted Dr. Sanjay Maitra, a consultant nephrologist at Apollo. Dr. Maitra discovered that Mr. Nalakumar was in critical condition, with unrecordable blood pressure and an infected dialysis line. He was immediately admitted to the ICU, and the dialysis line was changed. Due to gastrointestinal bleeding, his haemoglobin levels dropped, necessitating multiple blood transfusions and expensive antibiotics. He also underwent cauterization for GI bleeding. Facing severe financial constraints, the family considered discontinuing the treatment. Fortunately, after leaving the hospital, Mr. Nalakumar’s urine output improved, and he continued his antibiotics as prescribed. Dr. Maitra provided him with a post-meal care plan.
