About TAVI/TAVR

TAVI(Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) or TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement) represents a groundbreaking approach to treating aortic valve stenosis without requiring open-heart surgery. The procedure involves the introduction of a new valve through a catheterin the groin, which is then implanted within the existing valve.

This minimally invasive method of advantages such as the absence of surgical scaring, expedited recovery, and outcomes comparable in safety to traditional surgery. Our proficient team will conduct a complete evaluation of your condition to ascertain if TAVI/ TAVR is the optimal treatment option for you.

How Does TAVI/TAVR Work?

Anaesthesia Decision

During your consultation with the cardiac specialist and anesthesiologist, a comprehensive assessment will be conducted to determine the most suitable type of anesthesia for your procedure, with options including local or general anesthesia.

Preparation in Catheter

Before entering the catheter lab, a small intravenous tube (IV) will be strategically placed in a vein to facilitate necessary support during the upcoming procedure.

TAVI Procedure

Within the catheter lab, medical professionals will create a small incision in the groin area. Subsequently, catheters will be carefully inserted into the artery and vein. A specialized catheter carrying the new valve will be guided to replace the old one. The duration ofthe TAVI procedure usually spans one to two hours.

FAQs

In traditional open-heart surgery, the heart surgeon makes an incision in the center of the chest, stops the heart, and repairs or replaces the aortic valve. This requires the use of a bypass machine. In TAVI, there is no need to open the chest or stop the heart. Instead, a catheter is inserted into a blood vessel in the groin, through which the implant is passed into the heart and positioned.

TAVI is typically suitable for individuals with severe aortic valve stenosis who are at high risk for traditional open-heart surgery due to factors such as age (>65 years), multiple comorbidities (lung disease, chronic kidney disease), or prior heart surgery. In these cases, TAVI is a viable option. Additionally, an increasing number of low/medium risk patients are also undergoing TAVI.
