    FAQ's

There are two common types of thyroid disorders: Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism. Hypothyroidism often presents with symptoms such as weight gain, cold intolerance, hair loss, constipation, dry skin, irregular menstrual cycles, and neck swelling. Hyperthyroidism is typically characterised by weight loss, palpitations, tremors in the hands and feet, heat intolerance, excessive sweating, and neck swelling. Other thyroid disorders, such as thyroid nodules, may present as neck swelling accompanied by hormonal abnormalities. These conditions require careful examination, thyroid testing, and an FNAC (Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology) of the thyroid (if needed) for proper management.

In most cases, diagnosis typically involves a comprehensive review of symptoms and medical history, followed by a physical examination to screen for thyroid enlargement or nodules. Blood tests are then performed to determine if it is hyper- or hypothyroidism and if needed diagnostic imaging are performed. The treatment is usually based on the type of condition. Treatment options for hyperthyroidism usually include antithyroid medications, radioactive iodine therapy, or thyroidectomy. On the other hand, hypothyroidism is treated with thyroid replacement medications, which are synthetic hormones that mimic the functions of natural thyroid hormones.

Diabetes mellitus is a condition characterised by elevated blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia) due to a relative or absolute deficiency of insulin. The main types of diabetes include: type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, and other specific types. Type 1 diabetes involves absolute insulin deficiency which needs insulin treatment for control of sugars and survival, whereas in type 2 diabetes there is a relative insulin deficiency along with insulin resistance. Patients can be managed either with oral medications or insulin.

Some of the signs and symptoms of diabetes include the following: Frequent urination Feeling more thirsty, tired, and weak Unexplained weight loss Blurring of vision Infections (urinary, genital, skin, and gum infections) Non healing ulcers Generalised weakness

Treatments for endocrine disorders are usually based on the type of disease that affects the endocrine gland and the complexity of the condition.

At Apollo Hospitals, Secunderabad, endocrinologists address PCOS by reviewing symptoms (irregular periods, excess hair growth, and acne), medical history, and conducting physical examinations. After a complete clinical examination, patients need to undergo a hormonal evaluation and ultrasonography to rule out any hormonal disorders. Treatments typically involve lifestyle modifications, and medications if needed.
