Approximately one in every 20 Indians experiences hip pain related to arthritis, while over 400,000 Indians suffer from hip fractures every year. Dislocation of hip fractures can potentially result in osteonecrosis, a condition that interrupts blood supply to the hips, leading to severe complications including disability.
Total hip replacement is a surgical intervention aimed at substituting these types of hip joints. Apollo Hospitals in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, is one of the best hospitals for total hip replacement in India. Our orthopaedic surgeons prioritise employing minimally invasive techniques for total hip replacement. This involves utilising small incisions, resulting in reduced pain, shorter hospitalisation, and a quicker recovery period.
What happens in Total Hip Replacement?
- Joint Removal: The hip joint consists of two key components: the hip socket and the ball or head of the thigh bone (femur). Both parts of the hip joint are removed during the procedure.
- Artificial Surfaces: Smooth artificial surfaces replace the removed joint components.
- Socket Construction: The artificial socket is crafted from high-density plastic.
- Ball and Stem Construction: The artificial ball, along with its stem, is constructed from strong stainless metal.
- Implantation: Artificial components are implanted into healthy parts of the pelvis and thigh bones.
- Secure Attachment: Components are securely attached using bone cement known as methyl methacrylate.

Postoperative Care for Total Hip Replacement
- After surgery, you will be shifted to the recovery room from where your vitals will be closely monitored. X-rays will be taken to assess the success of the surgery.
- Once in stable condition, you will be transferred back to the ward. Drains will be removed, and you can start walking based on comfort and surgeon’s advice.
- A physiotherapist will teach post-operative hip exercises to improve mobility.
- You will be discharged around 5 to 7 days after the surgery. Your doctor will provide a recovery plan to follow post-discharge.
