    Robotic Knee Replacement

Robotic knee replacement represents a cutting-edge advancement in knee surgery. Conducted under general anaesthesia, the procedure involves the surgeons making small incisions and utilising a robotic arm equipped with a camera for visual guidance displayed on a monitor.

Apollo Hospitals in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, stands at the forefront of employing robotic advancements in various departments. Our Orthopaedic department is no exception and is equipped with robotic technologies to carry out various procedures including robotic knee replacement.

With various instruments attached to the robotic arm, damaged joints or tissue is meticulously removed and replaced with an artificial joint. This replacement can be partial, focusing on the specific damaged part of the knee joint, or total, involving the entire knee when extensively damaged. Robotic knee replacement provides enhanced precision and faster recovery compared to conventional total knee replacement.

Preparing for Your Robotic Knee Replacement

Following these pre-surgery instructions is like ensuring a safe and smooth journey during your surgery. These steps are carefully designed to lay the foundation for a successful procedure, minimise risks, and fast-track your journey back to good health:

    • Prior to your surgery, kindly don’t eat or drink after midnight.
    • Take a shower, bath, or sponge bath the night before and the morning of surgery. Please let the nurse know if you have a soap or iodine allergy.
    • For surgery and rehabilitation, you must sign a written consent.
    • Kindly inform your doctor about current medications or health issues.
    • Engaging in regular exercise prior to the surgery can help improve postoperative healing.
    • Arrange for someone to bring you home after your surgery, as you will not be able to drive.

While You are Having Your Robotic Knee Replacement

Robotic knee replacement is performed under general anesthesia, with you being asleep during the operation so you feel no pain.

Your surgeon will make small incisions and use a robotic arm with a camera attached for video assistance to show an image of the surgery on a monitor. Utilizing various instruments attached to the robotic arm, the damaged joint or tissue is removed and substituted with an artificial joint. This joint replacement can be either partial or total.

For partial knee replacement, when only a specific part of the knee joint is damaged, the robotic procedure focuses on replacing only that particular section with an artificial joint.

In the case of robotic total knee replacement, when the entire knee joint is extensively damaged, the entire knee is replaced with an artificial joint.

    Post-Surgery Hospital Guidelines and Information

    • After your surgery, you will have a bandage on your knee to keep it safe while it heals. The bandage will be changed regularly.
    • You might get a blood transfusion based on your blood levels.
    • Post-surgery, you will be able to walk within 12–24 hours with the help of our physiotherapist.
    • You will use a walking frame or crutches at first. Recovery time may vary depending on the individual, but most people can walk independently with the help of a walking stick around 1-2 weeks later.
    • Our physiotherapist will show you some exercises while you are in the hospital to strengthen your knees.
    • You can start doing these exercises the day after your surgery. It’s common to experience discomfort and some swelling in your legs and feet when you first start walking and exercising.
    • About two weeks after the surgery, the stitches or staples will be taken out.

    FAQ's

Robotic total knee replacement surgery has advantages. It ensures precise implant placement and alignment, customised to the patient's anatomy. This can lead to quicker recovery with less pain and shorter hospital stays. The procedure also reduces risks and improves long-term outcomes.

Robotic knee surgery carries similar risks to traditional knee surgery, such as infection, knee stiffness, persistent knee pain, or an implant not meeting the patient's and doctor's expectations.

Following surgery, most individuals can return to daily activities with decreased pain in about three to six weeks. It typically takes between four months to a year to achieve full recovery.
