    Tumours

Brain tumours, or intracranial tumours, are abnormal cells in the brain that could be cancerous (malignant) or non-cancerous (benign). Brain tumours, whether malignant or benign, can lead to a buildup of pressure inside the brain, causing brain damage. This can be life-threatening, often leading to severe complications. At Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, we offer advanced treatment options and cutting-edge surgical techniques to manage and treat brain tumours effectively.

    Conditions Treated

Brain tumours can be primary, i.e., tumours that originate in the brain. These tumours are mostly benign. On the other hand, secondary or metastatic brain tumours are cancer cells that are spread to the brain from other organs like the breast or lung.

    Benign Brain Tumours

    • Chordomas
    • Craniopharyngiomas
    • Gangliocytomas, gangliomas and anaplastic gangliomas

Most malignant brain tumours are characterised as gliomas, which can be the following:

    • Astrocytoma
    • Glioblastoma (GBM)
    • Ependymomas
    • Oligodendroglioma
    • Medulloblastoma, a type of malignant tumour commonly seen in paediatric patients

    FAQ's

Depending on tumour size of the brain, locations, and rate of growth (tumour grade), symptoms can vary. General symptoms include pressure or headache or frequent and severe headache, nausea and vomiting, vision problems, loss of coordination, problems with hearing, speech and memory, fatigue, personality or emotional changes, and feeling very hungry along with weight gain.

Along with reviewing your symptoms, and medical as well as your family history, a comprehensive neurological examination is carried out to check signs of vision, hearing, coordination, reflexes and strength. Imaging and screening tests like head computed tomography (CT) scan, brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron-emission tomography (PET) scan, or brain biopsy are then taken to confirm diagnosis and identify grade and stage.

Primary treatment for most brain tumours is surgery, although this can depend on the type, size, location of the tumour and your overall health. Depending on these factors, surgery can be combined with other treatments like chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Post-recovery like physical therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy are performed to regain your strength. Our neurologists at Apollo Hospitals will discuss treatments and create personalised plans based on your needs and condition.
