    Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic, neurological, and auto-immune disorder, i.e., a condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks CNS (brain and spinal cord). The condition occurs when the protective sheath that surrounds the nerve cells, called the myelin, becomes damaged due to an attack from the immune system. This causes problems in brain signalling and communication.

Multiple sclerosis can lead to problems in vision, balance, and other body functions. At Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, we are equipped with advanced and sophisticated technologies, along with experienced neurologists, to treat multiple sclerosis.

    FAQ's

Symptoms of multiple sclerosis vary among patients but generally include numbness or weakness in limbs, fatigue, shock-like neck sensations, coordination issues, partial or complete vision loss in one eye, imbalance, prolonged double or blurred vision, tingling, slurred speech, mood changes, urinary and bowel incontinence, sexual problems, cognitive difficulties, and vertigo.

Your medical history is carefully reviewed, followed by physical and neurological examination to check signs of nerve damage in the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerve. Diagnosing multiple sclerosis can be challenging, often requiring several visits, as its symptoms can resemble other conditions. Common diagnostic tests include blood tests, a spinal tap, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), evoked potential tests, and optical coherence tomography (OCT).

Current treatment options aim at slowing the progression of symptoms, and reducing relapses. These treatments include disease-modifying medications such as alemtuzumab, teriflunomide, and beta interferon drugs, as well as corticosteroids and plasmapheresis to help recover from its attacks. Symptomatic treatments like muscle relaxants, antidepressants, and other medications, along with physical and occupational therapy, are also used to manage the condition effectively.
