Kidney Function Tests
Kidney function tests assess the efficiency of your kidneys in eliminating waste from your body. These tests typically involve analysing blood samples, collecting a 24-hour urine sample, or both. Results are usually available on the same day or within a few days after the test.

Why Might I Need A Kidney Function Test?
Kidney function tests are advised by doctors to monitor the impact of conditions like diabetes or hypertension on kidney function. Additionally, individuals exhibiting symptoms suggestive of kidney issues may require a kidney function test.
These symptoms could include:
- Blood in your urine (hematuria)
- Painful urination (dysuria)
- Frequent urge to urinate
- Problems with starting to pee
What Are the Types of Kidney Function Tests?
Your doctor might request various types of kidney function tests, which can include blood tests and 24-hour urine tests:
Blood tests may involve:
- Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) is used to assess nitrogen levels derived from protein breakdown in the blood.
- Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) to estimate filtration rates based on factors such as protein levels, age, gender, size, and race.
- Serum creatinine is used to detect the accumulation of creatinine, a byproduct of muscle tissue breakdown.
Additionally, 24-hour urine tests may be conducted, which may include:
- Microalbuminuria to detect specific protein albumin in urine.
- Urinalysis is used to assess urine for the presence of blood, proteins, and overall kidney function.
How are the tests performed?
For blood samples:
- BUN and serum creatinine tests require blood drawn in a lab.
- A technician will tie an elastic band around your arm to locate the vein, clean the area, and insert a needle to collect the blood.
- You might feel a slight pinch or prick, and afterwards, the area may bruise slightly.
For the 24-hour urine sample:
- Begin by urinating into the toilet as usual upon waking.
- Throughout the day and night, collect urine in a container provided by your doctor, keeping it refrigerated and labelled.
- On the second morning, urinate into the container to complete the collection.
- Follow the instructions for returning the sample to your doctor’s office or a lab.
