    High-Resolution Anorectal Manometry

High-resolution anorectal manometry is a diagnostic procedure crucial for evaluating various bowel-related issues such as faecal incontinence, anorectal constipation, and Hirschsprung’s disease. By measuring anal muscle pressures, assessing rectal sensation, and examining neural reflexes involved in bowel movements, this test helps identify specific problems and guides treatment decisions.

At Apollo Hospital in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, our skilled professionals guarantee a secure and comprehensive journey for each patient. Using advanced technology and expertise, we deliver accurate diagnoses and proficiently conduct high-resolution anorectal manometry tests.

What Happens In High-Resolution Anorectal Manometry?

During the test, patients lie on their left side, and a small, flexible tube, similar in size to a thermometer, is inserted into the rectum. This tube has a balloon at the end and is connected to a machine to measure pressure. The balloon may be inflated in the rectum to evaluate reflex pathways, while the patient may be asked to perform actions like squeezing, coughing, relaxing, and pushing to measure anal sphincter muscle pressure.

A balloon expulsion test may be conducted, where a small balloon is inflated in the rectum and the patient tries to expel it in the bathroom. The time taken for expulsion is recorded, with prolonged expulsion indicating potential issues in the anorectal area.

Pre-Operative Care For High-Resolution Anorectal Manometry

    • If your test is in the morning, avoid eating or drinking after midnight. For afternoon appointments, a light breakfast is permissible up to 4 hours before the test. Diabetic patients should consult their primary care doctor.
    • Ensure your bowel is empty before the study.
    • Scheduled medications can be taken with small sips of water at least 2 hours prior to the study.

Post-Operative Care For High-Resolution Anorectal Manometry

After undergoing high-resolution anorectal manometry, it’s essential to follow post-operative care guidelines for optimal recovery:

    • Allow yourself adequate rest following the procedure to aid in recovery. Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated, unless otherwise advised by your healthcare provider.
    • If you experience discomfort, follow your doctor’s recommendations for pain relief medications. Avoid strenuous activities or heavy lifting for the specified duration recommended by your healthcare provider.
    • Follow any dietary instructions provided by your healthcare team. This may include gradually reintroducing solid foods if fasting was required before the procedure.
    • Follow your doctor’s instructions and take the prescribed medications as directed. If you have any concerns or experience adverse reactions, contact your doctor immediately.
    • Make sure to attend any follow-up appointments that are scheduled to track your progress and discuss any concerns.

Potential Risks Associated With High-Resolution Anorectal Manometry

    • High-resolution anorectal manometry is generally considered safe with minimal risk of discomfort.
    • Complications such as rectal perforation or bleeding are rare occurrences.
    • Equipment malfunction is also uncommon but cannot be entirely ruled out.
    • Patients with latex allergies should notify the nurse or technician beforehand to ensure the use of a latex-free balloon during the procedure.
