    Endoscopic Mucosal Resection

Endoscopic mucosal resection is a procedure used to eliminate cancerous or internal injuries identified within the digestive tract by removing the mucous membrane. It has been recommended for the treatment of early oesophageal malignancies, as it has proven to be a safe and effective therapy for early squamous cell carcinoma.

It has also been shown to be effective in the treatment of early cancer of Barrett’s oesophagus, a condition where the lining of the oesophagus changes, usually due to acid reflux.

At Apollo Hospitals in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, our expert gastroenterologists provide top-notch care, performing advanced endoscopic mucosal resection for patients in need.

What Conditions Does Endoscopic Mucosal Resection Treat?

Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) is typically used to treat early-stage cancer or precancerous growths (lesions or polyps). Gastroenterologists utilise EMR for tumours that develop in the mucosa, the inner membrane lining of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

EMR is commonly used to treat:

    • Barrett’s oesophagus
    • Colorectal cancer
    • Esophageal cancer
    • Small intestine cancer
    • Stomach cancer

What Happens During Endoscopic Mucosal Resection?

During endoscopic mucosal resection, your gastroenterologist will:

    • Insert the endoscope through your mouth (for upper GI procedures) or anus (for lower GI procedures).
    • Guide the endoscope to the abnormal tissue.
    • Pass surgical instruments through the endoscope.
    • Remove the abnormal tissue by suctioning, injecting a solution, or cutting it out with an electric wire.

The procedure is performed under anaesthesia and typically takes around 30 to 60 minutes.

    What Happens After EMR?

Following the EMR procedure, you will be taken to a recovery room, where you will receive detailed instructions regarding diet, medications, and follow-up care. The results of the procedure will be communicated to your referring doctor.

For those who have undergone EMR of the oesophagus, mild chest discomfort may occur for a few days. Your doctor will advise you to follow a liquid diet for 1 to 2 days post-procedure, followed by soft or pureed food for another 2 days. Additionally, you should continue taking your proton pump inhibitor (PPI) acid-reducing medication twice a day. You may also be prescribed medication to coat the oesophagus, easing discomfort and aiding in healing.
