    Home Cardiology Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE)

    Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE)

A Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE), is a type of echocardiogram (ECHO) procedure that gives detailed images of the heart and aorta by generating images of the heart from the inside of the body. A TEE is generally recommended when a standard ECHO does not provide many details.

At Apollo Hospitals in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, our cardiologists use this sophisticated procedure to diagnose complex heart issues and provide the most effective treatment plans

    When is a TEE Required?

A TTE is usually recommended by cardiologists to :

    • Evaluate symptoms that may indicate conditions such as heart failure, cardiomyopathy, congenital heart disease, aneurysm, atherosclerosis, blood clots and stroke, pericarditis, etc.
    • Perform open-heart surgery after valve replacement/repair or coronary artery bypass
    • Ensure there are no blood clots before undergoing medical procedures such as cardioversion
    • Confirm whether the surgery is successful after the required procedure.

What Can I Expect During a TEE Procedure?

Before undergoing the procedure, you may be advised to change into a gown, empty your bladder, and remove any jewellery or other objects such as dentures and any oral prosthesis. An IV line will be administered to inject medicine or to give IV fluids. You will be positioned appropriately on a table or a bed, and electrodes will be attached to record your heart activity. Your vital signs are also monitored during the procedure.

Mild or moderate sedation is given to relax, and local anaesthesia will be applied to the back of the throat. The probe is passed through the mouth and throat, and guided down through the oesophagus. You may be instructed to swallow to help pass the probe. The images are taken once the probe is rightly placed. Once the images are taken, the probe is removed from the throat.

    FAQ's

You may be advised to fast for a certain period before the procedure and avoid alcohol a few days before the test. You will also need to plan your return from the hospital since sedatives will be administered. Moreover, let our cardiologists know if you have certain medical conditions, such as problems swallowing, gastrointestinal bleeding, oesophageal cancer, etc.

Sore throats are common and can last for a few hours or up to 3 to 5 days. Severe complications, although rare, include allergic reactions to medications, high/low blood pressure, arrhythmia, minor bleeding in the oesophagus, and aspiration pneumonia.

Depending on patient factors, a TEE examination can usually take 10 to 30 minutes. An additional 15–20 minutes may be required for post-procedural monitoring.
