What Can I Expect During a TEE Procedure?
Before undergoing the procedure, you may be advised to change into a gown, empty your bladder, and remove any jewellery or other objects such as dentures and any oral prosthesis. An IV line will be administered to inject medicine or to give IV fluids. You will be positioned appropriately on a table or a bed, and electrodes will be attached to record your heart activity. Your vital signs are also monitored during the procedure.
Mild or moderate sedation is given to relax, and local anaesthesia will be applied to the back of the throat. The probe is passed through the mouth and throat, and guided down through the oesophagus. You may be instructed to swallow to help pass the probe. The images are taken once the probe is rightly placed. Once the images are taken, the probe is removed from the throat.
