    What is an ICD?

An ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) is a battery-powered device implanted under the skin that monitors your heart rate. It is connected to your heart by thin wires. The heart’s electrical system controls its rhythm, sending signals that prompt each heartbeat and blood pump.

If this system malfunctions, leading to an abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmia), an ICD can help. The device detects irregular rhythms and delivers an electric shock to restore a normal heartbeat.

    Working of an ICD

If an ICD detects a dangerous heart rhythm, it can provide one or more of these treatments:

    • Pacing: Sends a series of low-voltage impulses to regulate the heart rate.
    • Cardioversion: Applies small electric shocks to reset the heart’s rhythm.
    • Defibrillation: Delivers stronger electric shocks to correct severe arrhythmias.

How to Get Prepared for an ICD Implantation?

    • Before getting an ICD, you will probably need to fast for a few hours.
    • Inform your doctor about all your medications and ask if you should take any before the procedure.

    Implantation of ICD

A battery-powered pulse generator is placed in a small pouch under the skin, usually below the collarbone or along the ribs. In infants, it may be implanted in the abdomen. The generator is roughly the size of a pocket watch. Wires or leads extend from the generator to specific areas on or inside the heart and are inserted through blood vessels, avoiding the need for open-chest surgery.

    After the Procedure

    • Usually, you can return home the day after your ICD procedure.
    • The area where the ICD was placed may be swollen and tender for a few days or weeks.
    • Adhere to the medications prescribed by your doctor.
    • For about eight weeks, avoid sudden movements that raise your left arm above your shoulder to prevent displacing the device wires.
    • For about four weeks, avoid energetic sports or activities that involve lifting your left arm, heavy lifting, and strenuous exercises.

    FAQ's

Your doctor will assess your need for an ICD through a thorough evaluation, including a medical history review, physical exam, echocardiogram (heart ultrasound), electrocardiogram (heart rhythm test), and possibly additional tests like a nuclear stress test, cardiac catheterisation, or cardiac MRI.

You can use a smartphone with an ICD, but be cautious if it contains magnetic material. Keep your phone at least 6 inches away from your ICD to avoid any potential interference.

ICDs typically last 10 years or more, depending on how often they are used and the specific type of device.
