    Holter Monitor (Ambulatory Electrocardiogram)

A Holter Monitor (Ambulatory Electrocardiogram) is a portable, small, battery-powered device that records your heart activity for 12 to 48 hours. At Apollo Hospitals in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, our cardiologists use Holter monitors to provide a detailed view of your heart’s activity during your daily routine.

What Conditions Can a Holter Monitor Detect?

A Holter Monitor is typically recommended to:

    • Identify occasional cardiac arrhythmias that do not reflect or provide inconclusive results during an electrocardiogram (ECG).
    • Determine episodes of heart rhythm symptoms, such as unexplained dizziness, shortness of breath, or fatigue.
    • Detects heart palpitations or future heart-related events. This includes conditions like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.
    • Confirm whether the heart is receiving sufficient oxygen or to assess if treatments like medications or pacemakers are functioning properly.

How Does a Holter Monitor Work?

The Holter monitor consists of several wires connected to small electrodes placed on your chest. These electrodes pick up your heart’s activity and record it on the monitor, which can be worn in various ways (attached to your chest, around your waist, or in a bag).

For accurate readings, keep the monitor close to your body. You will receive instructions on caring for the device and may be asked to maintain an activity journal to correlate symptoms with your heart’s activity.

What Happens After Using a Holter Monitor?

Once the monitoring period is complete, the device is removed, and technicians analyse the results alongside your journal. A report is sent to your cardiologist, who will discuss any further testing or interventions if needed.

    FAQ's

While an electrocardiogram (ECG) does measure your heart activity, it only records the time while you are having the test. However, your heart’s rhythm and symptoms can vary throughout the day. With a Holter Monitor, our cardiologists can observe how your heartbeat changes while going through your normal routine.

No necessary preparations are required for wearing a Holter monitor. However, you may be advised to shave your chest area where the electrodes will be placed. You will also be instructed to keep the monitor away from other electrical devices while wearing it, and avoid putting on moisturiser or lotion, as it can affect the attachment of leads.

There are no complications while wearing a Holter monitor. The electrodes that are attached to your chest may cause skin irritation or itchiness. However, this occurs rarely.
