An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a straightforward, non-invasive, and painless test used to assess your heart’s rhythm and electrical activity. It helps in diagnosing various heart conditions, such as abnormal heart rhythms and coronary artery disease. What Happens During an ECG Procedure?
You will be asked to lie down while the healthcare provider cleans specific areas on your arms, legs, and chest before attaching small adhesive patches called electrodes. The number of electrodes used can vary. These patches are connected by wires to a machine that translates the heart’s electrical signals into wavy lines, often printed on paper for the doctor to review.
In some instances, the test may be performed while you are exercising or under mild stress to observe changes in heart function. This version of the ECG is commonly referred to as an exercise ECG or stress test.
