    Catheter Ablation

Catheter ablation, also known as radiofrequency ablation, is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat irregular heart rhythms, or arrhythmias. It employs heat or cold energy to make small scars in the heart that block abnormal signals and restore a normal heartbeat. At Apollo Hospitals in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, our expert cardiac surgeons are highly skilled in performing this procedure.

    Conditions Treated

Many conditions can be treated with catheter ablation, such as:

    • Atrial Tachycardia
    • Atrial Flutter
    • Paroxysmal Supraventricular Tachycardia (PSVT)
    • Arrhythmia
    • Atrial Fibrillation
    • Ventricular Tachycardia
    • Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome
    • Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

    How Does Catheter Ablation Work?

Catheter ablation involves inserting thin, flexible tubes (catheters) into blood vessels to reach the heart. These catheters record the heart’s electrical activity, allowing precise identification of the source of the arrhythmia.

Once located, the affected area of the heart muscle is ablated using either heat (radiofrequency ablation) or freezing (cryoablation). This process creates scar tissue that disrupts electrical conduction, effectively isolating the problematic area and preventing abnormal signals from affecting other parts of the heart.

    Before the Procedure:

Your catheter ablation procedure will be performed in the electrophysiology lab, which resembles an operating room. You will be transported to the procedure room and asked to lie on a procedure table. Although you will be awake during the procedure, your doctor will administer sedation through a cannula in your arm to help you relax before the procedure begins.

    After the Procedure

After your catheter ablation is complete, your doctor will remove the catheters, apply pressure to the insertion site, and place a dressing. You will then be closely monitored in a recovery area. Depending on your condition, you may need to rest in bed for a short period. Most patients can go home either the same day or the following morning. Many people resume normal activities, such as walking and bathing, shortly after discharge and can return to work within a day or two.

    FAQ's

A catheter ablation procedure can take as little as 15 minutes for simpler cases, while more complex procedures may last three to four hours. This timeframe typically includes preparation and recovery periods.

➢ Avoid eating or drinking for 6 hours before your procedure. ➢ Consult your doctor about whether to take your usual medications, especially blood thinners. ➢ Remove any daily jewellery before the procedure

While serious risks are uncommon, catheter ablation does carry some risks. The most frequent issue is bruising or swelling at the puncture site in the leg. Less common complications include: ➢ Arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms) ➢ Pericarditis (inflammation of the heart lining) ➢ Major bleeding or bruising at the puncture site ➢ Infection ➢ Damage to heart muscle, valves, or blood vessels
