    Home Cardiology Angiogram

    Angiogram

An angiogram is a diagnostic procedure that uses X-rays to identify blockages in your blood vessels, including arteries and veins. This test allows doctors to examine blood vessels and detect issues within the vascular system in various parts of the body. It is useful for diagnosing conditions like cardiovascular disease, stroke, and other vascular problems.

At Apollo Hospitals in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, our expert cardiologists and radiologists specialise in performing angiograms to accurately diagnose vascular issues and recommend the most appropriate treatment.

    When is an Angiogram Advised?

Your doctor will recommend an angiogram if you experience the following symptoms:

    • Chest pain
    • Unexplained pain in the chest, jaw, neck, or arm that other tests can’t identify
    • Blood vessel issues
    • A congenital heart defect present from birth
    • Abnormal results from an exercise stress test
    • Chest trauma or injury
    • Heart valve disease requiring surgery

A coronary angiogram might also be recommended if:

    • You have a congenital heart defect.
    • You have sustained a significant chest injury.
    • You have blood vessel issues in other parts of your body.

    What Happens During an Angiogram?

During an angiogram, you will usually remain awake, though you may be given a sedative to help you relax. While lying on an X-ray table, a small incision is made in an artery, typically near your groin or wrist, with a local anaesthetic to numb the area. A thin, flexible catheter is inserted into the artery and guided to the target area, such as the heart.

A contrast dye is then injected through the catheter, and X-rays are taken as the dye moves through your blood vessels. The procedure generally lasts 30 minutes to 2 hours, and you will usually be able to go home a few hours afterward.

    FAQ's

To prepare for your coronary angiogram, you should have a blood test within the four weeks before the procedure. Consult your doctor about your usual medications, particularly if you take diabetes or blood-thinning medications. Additionally, remove any jewellery and wear a hospital gown.

After the angiogram, you will be transported back to your ward on a trolley. The nursing staff will perform routine checks, including monitoring your pulse and blood pressure and inspecting the insertion site to ensure there is no bleeding. You will typically remain in bed for a few hours to recover. Depending on your condition, you may be discharged the same day or kept in the hospital overnight.

Angiograms are generally very safe, but there are some potential risks, including an allergic reaction to the dye, which may cause itching, rash, or breathing difficulties, bruising or bleeding at the incision site, and pain. If you experience bleeding, severe pain, signs of infection like swelling or fever, or chest pain after the procedure, contact your doctor immediately.
