SWAP Transplant Program
Patients with organ failure continue to suffer due to lack of suitable organ donors. 2 families had a similar problem of nonavailability of compatible organs for transplantation. Although, the relatives of patient were willing to donate organs. Unfortunately, they were not medically compatible for their respective relatives.
The two families negotiated under the supervision of Dr Ravi Andrews, Senior Consultant – Nephrology and after obtaining permission from the DME Office, they underwent a SWAP transplant with the female donating to the female patient and the male donating to the male patient. The surgical team led by Dr K Subramanyam, Senior Consultant – Urology started and completed all four surgeries at the same time and sent the four patients back to the wards at precisely the same time. It is one month now and both patients are doing well with normal graft function.
