A Unique Medical Feat At Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad
Five Trans-Catheter Aortic Valve Replacements
(Non-Surgical Replacement Of Heart Valve)
Performed On A Single Day For The First Time In India
Hyderabad, January 21st, 2019 : Trans-catheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) is one of the latest advancements in the field of Cardiology and it provides hope for the high risk elderly who need aortic valve replacement. TAVR is an advanced suture less procedure performed to replace damaged aortic valve and is a boon for patients with high surgical risk.
As part of the program the Cardiologists at the Hospital, led by Dr A. Sreenivas Kumar, Sr. Consultant Cardiologist & Director, Cardiology and Clinical Research, Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad; created history by treating five critically ill patients suffering from valve disease with TAVR on a single day, a feat performed for the first time in the country.
Cardiologists having intensive training in TAVR with dexterity can perform and ensure good outcomes from this complex procedure. An excellent back-up from experienced team and state-of-the-art technology are other prerequisites to its success. Most patients coming for this procedure are in a critical condition and therefore flawless protocol becomes essential, says Dr.K.Hari Prasad, President-Hospitals Division, Apollo Hospitals Group.
The ‘Heart Valve Therapy Program’ is a boon for Indian patients, especially the ones for whom surgery option is closed and are left to endure the problem. The world’s best treatment protocol is now within their reach, says Dr Sreenivas Kumar.
It was a historic day for Apollo Hospitals as five patients underwent TAVR on a single day, which is an Indian record. All the five were in an advanced age, critical condition and had high risk for open heart surgery for valve replacement. This is the first time such medical feat was performed in India. The five patients treated with TAVR are Mr. Rajesham, a 73 year old male from Siddipet, had severe Aortic Valve Stenosis with moderate L V dysfunction; Mr. Rajendra Prasad, 70 year old male from Hyderabad had Severe Aortic Stenosis with Presncopo with LV dysfunction; Mr. Prasad Rao, a 73 year old male, from Hyderabad, was suffering from severe Aortic Stenosis with Giddinum; Mr. Damodar Das Rathi, a 70 old male from Hyderabad had severe Aortic Stenosis of bio-prosthetic valve with LV dysfunction, he had a post surgical Aortic valve replacement in 2009 and Mr. Veeraiah, 66 year old male from Khammam, had Severe Aortic Stenosis, Severe LV dysfunction, Moderate MR and Post PTCA in 2011. All the patients were discharged on the 2nd day of the procedure.
We are extremely delighted at this accomplishment of performing five Trans-catheter Aortic Valve Replacements in a day, for the first time in India. It’s an excellent start for a program of this eminence and will give the necessary impetus to make it a grand success benefiting several of our patients, says Dr Sreenivas Kumar.
About Trans-catheter Aortic Valve Replacement
The narrowing of the aortic valve leads to its dysfunction and is known as aortic stenosis. The Aortic valve connects the left ventricle – the blood pumping chamber at the bottom of the heart and the Aorta – the largest artery of the body, which carries the oxygenated blood to the body. The narrowing of this valve happens over years of degeneration with aging and also by birth defect. Its malfunction will result in reverse flow of the blood. Aortic valve stenosis can also lead to heart failure ultimately.
Aortic valve replacement has been conventionally done by performing an Open Heart surgery, which involves high risk for the patient, besides needing a prolonged bed rest for recovery. The novel procedure, TAVR is patient friendly with excellent results. It enables the patient to recover within two days. Being a minimally invasive procedure, it is done through a small aperture in the groin, with administering of anaesthesia for a limited period. Besides benefiting the regular patients, this procedure is a big boon for those in advanced age, those with high risk of surgery and associated complications like lung or kidney disease. Such patients hitherto had to endure the suffering without a treatment and TAVR provides them solace.
