Dr Alok Ranjan performs advanced robotic spine surgery using Mazor Robotics
Hyderabad, August 23rd, 2016: Apollo Hospitals performed a minimally invasive Advanced Robotic Spine Surgery. Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr Alok Ranjan performed the surgery successfully on eight patients including Mozambique former Foreign Minister’s wife, using this newest technology – Mazor Robotics. Mazor Robotics uses a special technology to guide precise placement of instrumentation in spine. This series was the first such surgeries performed in this part of the country including both the Telugu states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
In conventional spine surgery the key challenge has always been placement of instrumentation in spine. Especially placing of screws without damaging the nerves and getting the utmost stability was a huge task for Spine surgeons.
Spinal Stabilization and correction is the greatest innovation of last decade which has completely changed spine surgery and recovery from it. The major problem associated with instrumentation in a spine more so in a deformed spine is precise placement of screws without damaging the nerves and getting the most stability, says Dr Alok Ranjan.
Currently there are Navigation systems which can guide to some extent, but Mazor Robotics is generation ahead in precision as well as dynamic planning which cannot be matched by the existing ones.
Apart from precision, it helps in faster surgery, quicker recovery and is a great boon in minimally invasive spine surgery. Additionally, the radiation doses for operating room staff which is the current hidden monster is virtually eliminated, says Dr Hari Prasad, President, Apollo Hospitals Group.
Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad, has successfully performed spine surgeries on eight patients using the Mazor Robotics technology so far and the outcomes are stupendous.
Given a choice, no spine surgery requiring instrumentations should be done without it, adds Dr Ranjan.
Mazor Robotics is highly beneficial to patients, as it tremendously reduces surgery related complication, allows quick surgery and quicker discharge. Through this technology the scope of error is less than 1 mm in placing screws in spine. The Blood loss is zero if the surgery is done skillfully. Since it is a highly safe procedure the complications are almost nil and the success rate is as high as 99%. The recovery being fast, the patient can go home the same evening or the next day morning. It is safe for the medical professionals too, as it reduces radiation injury to them.
The precision technology gives peace of mind to surgeon and the patient, says Dr Prasad.
Mazor robotics was introduced in India only recently by Apollo Hospitals, Chennai and Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad, brought it here for the convenience of the patients.
