Is Snoring Bad For Your Health

There are certain factors that trigger snoring and its adverse effect on human cannot be ignored. But before going through the factors and effects that revolve around snoring, getting its meaning won’t be a bad idea. According to Indian Journal of Community (Official Publication of Indian Association of Preventive & Social Medicine), snoring is a type of sleeping disorder, which largely affects middle aged people and may as well leads to certain health conditions. Snoring is explained as the action or sound of breathing during sleep with harsh, snorting noises caused by vibration of the soft palate. However, below are major and valid known causes of snoring.

The following factors are responsible for snoring.

      • As one advances in age, the body requires additional strength to stay in shape as the muscles become slack. This also applies to the tongue and throat muscles thereby causing them to lax on the airways resulting into snoring while asleep.
      • Those with higher body weight are more prone to snoring because they have more fatty tissues in their throat with a weak muscle tone which creates a barrier in the throat muscle and thereby causing snoring.
      • Some sleeping positions also trigger snoring. Sleeping while lying on the back creates an atmosphere for snoring due to the pressure on the nasal region. This can be corrected by changing the sleep position, and probably sleeping on the sides rather than the back.
      • Other factors include the excessive intake of alcohol, smoking and medications. All these put the muscles into a relaxation mode which make the muscle of the throat to relent and barricade the free flow of air.
      • Smoking also leads to the irritation of the nasal cavity which also obstruct the flow of air while asleep. As harmless as snoring sounds, it poses some risks to the human health. Some of the effects of snoring on human are summarized as follows.

Adverse Effects of snoring on human

      1. Risk of heart attacks and stroke:

When snoring is prolonged and left unattended to, it results into a high blood pressure due to the strain on the heart that occurs while breathing with extra efforts because of the blockage in the nasal passage.

      2. Low circulation of oxygen

Low circulation of oxygen in the body is another negative effect of snoring in human. When snoring is left untreated, it leads to the narrowing of the blood vessels in the lungs thereby causing pulmonary hypertension.

      3. Medical situations

Snoring can also lead to medical situations like Arrhythmias (fluctuations of the heart due to the irregularities in the breathing pattern while snoring), GERD (Gastro esophageal Reflux Disease) which  is an acute digestive disease in which the stomach acids move into the esophagus causing the soft lining to be irritated.

      4. Drowsiness

Sleeping beside a snoring partner can make one drowsy throughout the day. The lousiness and irritation gotten from snoring is enough to keep anyone awake or experience a frequent waking from sleep all through the night.

      5. Chronic headaches

Due to the alterations in the amount of air in the blood stream, snorers are often prone to recurrent morning headaches.

      How to prevent snoring

      Findings have unveiled quite a number of ways in which snoring can be prevented and they include;

      • Avoiding excessive intake of alcohol, smoking or any medications that would relax the muscles.
      • Sleep on your sides instead of lying on the back.
      • Strive at losing weight as weight loss helps some people get rid of snoring but not everyone.
      • Change your pillows when necessary.
      • Ensure your body is hydrated.
      • Try taking warm bath before going to bed.

However, if you wish to record a positive out with the above methods of getting rid of snoring, you must be consistent with the above requirement and you are sure of experiencing a healthier body.
