Colchicine is being studied in a clinical trial for patients with COVID-19 (coronavirus). The aim of the trial is to determine if short-term treatment with colchicine will reduce lung complications and the rate of death in COVID-19 patients.

Colchicine is used in gout. It is believed to reduce the excessive inflammatory reaction caused by a coronavirus  that causes acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), organ failure, and death.
