Does ibuprofen make coronavirus worse?

18 February, 2025

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) include medications like ibuprofen, diclofenac, and naproxen, etc as well as selective COX2 inhibitors like celecoxib, rofecoxib, etoricoxib, lumiracoxib, and valecoxib.

Some French doctors had advised against using ibuprofen for COVID-19 symptoms as there were reports of confirmed COVID-19 patients who were taking an NSAID for symptom relief developing severe illness. These are only observations and not based on scientific studies. The WHO initially recommended using acetaminophen instead of ibuprofen for management of symptoms such as fever, body pain, etc related to this coronavirus infection, but now states that either acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be used. The CDC also says that while there is no current evidence about Ibuprofen causing severe COVID illness, they are continuing to study and monitor this concern .

It is always better to check with your doctor on all medications.
