Recent reports indicate an increase in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in China and its spreading in other countries. This respiratory virus primarily affects children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. While most cases are mild, severe infections can lead to complications such as pneumonia or bronchitis.

To safeguard yourself and your loved ones, follow this advisory:

What is HMPV?

HMPV is a respiratory virus that spreads through:

  • Close contact with an infected person.
  • Respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing.
  • Contaminated surfaces such as door handles or shared objects.

Symptoms to Watch For

  • Fever
  • Cough and congestion
  • Severe headache
  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Difficulty breathing (in severe cases)

High-risk groups include

  • Infants and young children
  • Elderly individuals
  • People with chronic health conditions or weakened immunity

Prevention Measures

1. Practice Hand Hygiene

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap is unavailable.

2. Avoid Crowded Places

  • Especially during outbreaks to minimize exposure.

3. Wear Masks

  • In public places to prevent respiratory droplet transmission.

4. Stay Home When Sick

  • Avoid work, school, or social gatherings if you experience symptoms.

5. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

  • Eat nutritious food, stay hydrated, and exercise to boost immunity.

6. Disinfect Surfaces Regularly

  • Clean frequently touched surfaces like doorknobs, phones, and countertops.

When to Seek Medical Help?

Consult a doctor immediately if you or your loved ones experience:

  • High fever persisting for more than three days.
  • Severe breathing difficulties.
  • Symptoms worsening despite basic care.
  • Fever in the elderly or individuals with comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, or other chronic conditions.
  • A noticeable drop in oxygen saturation levels compared to the normal range.

For Healthcare Providers and Institutions

  • Ensure adequate ventilation in patient areas.
  • Screen and isolate suspected cases promptly.
  • Follow infection control protocols rigorously.

Let’s work together to combat the spread of HMPV by staying informed and taking precautions. For any queries or concerns, contact your nearest healthcare provider or Apollo Hospitals helpline.
