Speciality And Areas Of Interest

STATEMENT OF PROFESSIONAL INTERESTS

During my residency at the KEM Hospital in general surgery and then the Lilavati Hospital & Research Centre in surgical gastroenterology, in Mumbai, I had the privilege to work with doctors and teachers like Professor R.D. Bapat, Professor A.N. Supe and Dr. P. Jagannath who instilled in me a keen interest in GI Surgery.

Sir Gangaram Hospital, provided me the exclusive opportunity to work with stalwarts like Prof. S. Nundy, Dr. A. Soin and Dr. Adarsh Choudhary. In addition to the experience of handling the entire spectrum of cases in GI surgery, I got a chance to actively participate in the Live Donor Liver Transplantation programme in the hospital attending nearly 50 hepatic transplantations.

Working at the Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai as a senior fellow and subsequently as a lecturer has been a fascinating and enlightening experience, giving me a thorough exposure to all major and complex GI oncosurgery cases. Working with Dr. Parul Shukla and Dr. Shailesh Shrikhande I have gained a lot of clinical skills, surgical finesse and a much-needed boost to handle major and complex cases on an individual basis.

Being amongst the first to complete the DNB surgical Gastroenterology course in only the second institute in this part of the country to be accredited to train students in this field, I now planned to pursue my interests professionally further in a centre of excellence for hepatopancreatobiliary surgery and liver transplantation.

The Seoul St. Mary Hospital, at Seoul, South Korea, an eminent establishment of the Catholic University of Korea, is a 1200 bedded hospital with 18 specialized clinical centers having a dedicated organ transplantation centre performing kidney, liver, and pancreas transplantations. They performed the first liver transplantation in 1989 and have carried out more than 600 liver transplants since then.

Working at a high volume centre for hepatobiliary surgery and liver transplantation and having had an eminent expert like Professor Young Kyoung You as my teacher has further enhanced my skills as a hepatobiliary and liver transplant surgeon.

Major complex hepatobiliary surgeries and liver transplantation are carried out at a handful of centers in the country. I had the privilege of training in Living Donor Liver Transplantation with Professor AS Soin in the country’s premier institute Medanta doing more than 250 LDLTs annually giving me complete and comprehensive exposure in all faculties of this rather complex and demanding procedure in addition to complex hepatobiliary cases. Working independently at Jupiter Hospital(2012-2014) has been a wonderful experience which has helped me grow in confidence and mature as an HPB surgeon.

It has been an enlightening experience working at Global Hospitals Mumbai and witnessing young hardworking individuals build a fantastic team. Working with a mentor like Professor Mohamed Rela first at Global Hospital and later at the Rela Institute & Medical Centre, Chennai and learning from his amazing surgical skills and clinical understanding of liver diseases has been a revelation and an enlightening experience.

Leading the team at the Jupiter group of hospitals since March 2022, has been a great learning experience in the leadership role where the team has managed to deliver the best outcomes in liver transplantation yet in a short while that we’ve been here.

With liver diseases increasing in India and the parallel and persistent increase in the cases requiring complex hepatopancreatobiliary surgeries along with liver transplantation, I believe that working at your institute will give me an opportunity to serve a larger number of patients in need and give me the satisfaction of serving the community in turn.
