Overview:
This test measures the amount of vitamin B12 present in the blood. Vitamin B12 plays an important role in the basic body functions that include maintaining brain health, producing blood cells and nerve functions. Deficiency of vitamin B12 leads to a reduction in the red blood cell count, a condition named as pernicious anaemia.
When it’s done:
This test is recommended when the routine blood tests indicate that the person may be having pernicious anaemia. This is caused by a poor absorption of vitamin B12 from the intestine. It is also performed in persons having symptoms such as weakness, loss of balance, tingling or numbness in the arms and legs and a loss of brain function.
When to Avoid:
Consult your doctor if you are taking any medicines, as it may alter the test results. Do not stop the medicines before consulting your doctor.
How to prepare:
You should fast for about 6 to 8 hours before undergoing the test.
