Overview:

The HbA1c test is used to determine the average blood glucose level in a patient over the past 2 to 3 months. The test is useful in diagnosing diabetes or an increased risk of developing diabetes. It also helps monitor the effectiveness of the treatment in a person with diabetes.

When it’s done:

The test is performed when:

• A person is first diagnosed with diabetes and then every 3 to 6 months
• A person experiences symptoms of diabetes, such as increased thirst, increased urination, fatigue, blurred vision and delayed healing infection

When to Avoid:

There is no specific condition when this test should be avoided.

How to prepare:

No special preparation is needed for the test. Consult your doctor on how often you need to get your glucose level tested.
