Liver Donor Evaluation Process

Our team conducts thorough assessments to ensure both donors and patients are suitable for transplantation. Comprehensive tests and evaluations are reviewed by a dedicated committee before scheduling the procedure, ensuring the highest standards of safety and success.

Meanwhile, a government-managed waiting list matches eligible patients with compatible donors based on factors like blood type and waiting time.

Determining Your Eligibility

The transplant team assesses your overall health to ensure you can handle the surgery and the medications afterward. They check for any issues that might affect the transplant's success.

This check involves:

  • Blood and urine tests to assess organ health, including the liver.
  • Ultrasound examinations for a closer look at the liver.
  • Heart evaluations to check its function.
  • Overall health check and cancer screenings.
  • Emotional well-being discussion.

Your eligibility for the transplant is discussed during
these evaluations with your doctor.

What happens during the procedure?

During the Deceased Donor Transplant procedure for liver transplantation, the patient undergoes general anesthesia for sedation. The transplant surgeon begins by creating an abdominal incision, varying in size and location based on the surgeon's approach and the patient's anatomy. The diseased liver is then removed, making way for the careful placement of the donor liver. Subsequently, the surgeon connects the patient's blood vessels and bile ducts to the newly transplanted liver. The surgery typically lasts from 12 to 18 hours, depending on the patient's specific condition. Following the successful liver placement, the surgeon closes the incision using stitches and staples, and the patient is transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU) for recovery.

In a Living-donor liver transplant, the surgery is pre-scheduled. Surgeons extract a portion of the liver from the living donor, replace the patient's diseased liver with the donated liver, and connect blood vessels and bile ducts. Both the transplanted liver portion in the patient and the remaining portion in the donor regenerate quickly, reaching normal volume within weeks.

Post the procedure

Post the procedure, the patient spends a few days in the ICU for close monitoring. The total hospitalization duration for the recipient is approximately 15 days, and for the donor, it is around 7 days. Following this, the patient is transferred to a designated transplant recovery area. Regular check-ups are integral to the recovery process, with a specific schedule devised by the transplant team.

Lifelong medication, including immunosuppressants and other drugs to prevent complications, is necessary. Crucial follow-up appointments commence two weeks after discharge and continue at intervals of six to nine months. Additionally, check-ups are recommended on the first anniversary of the transplant.

Recovery

Our team of experts will guide you throughout your recovery period after liver transplant surgery. The typical recovery duration spans six months or more, with the resumption of normal activities or returning to work varying based on the patient's pre-transplant health. Our commitment is to support and guide you through this recovery journey.
