Children operated upon for paediatric heart conditions (Left: Vineeta Kumari with Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals’ paediatric cardiac surgeon Dr Muthu Jothi . Right: Faizan with his parents. Both children were successfully operated upon for paediatric cardiac conditions during 2015-16Following discussions with the Chairman, Apollo Hospitals, Dr Prathap C. Reddy, Genesis Foundation referred two underprivileged patients for paediatric cardiac surgery. Due to paediatric heart disease, these children are often unable to survive to adulthood; access of the underprivileged to specialised healthcare facilities for surgical intervention is limited in such cases. In May 2015,Ms Vineeta Kumari, a daily wage worker’s 14-year-old daughter from a village in Aligarh district, Uttar Pradesh, was successfully operated upon in the hospital for mitral valve replacement. Master Faizan, son of an auto-rickshaw driver from Agra, was operated upon in November 2015. The children, who had been incapable of leading a healthy life and were unable to go to school, will now be able to lead healthy lives in adulthood.
