Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery
The department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at Apollo Specialty Hospital is rated among the finest in the country. The scope of this department includes investigation and treatment of diseases affecting the brain, spinal cord, muscles and nerves.
All Neurophysiologic investigations like EEG, video telemetry, electromyography, nerve conduction studies using magnetic stimulators and evoked potentials are available at these centres. The neuroradiological facilities include MRI scan with MR angiography, spiral CT scan, conventional angiography and SPECT studies.
Thrombolytic therapy for stroke patients and botulinum toxin therapy for focal dystonia are used by the doctors as and when necessary. The neurosurgeons routinely perform intracranial and spinal surgeries, stereotactic biopsy of deep-seated tumours and stereotactic radiosurgery for the treatment of arteriovenous malformations and tumours. Aneurysms, vascular malformations and head & neck skull base surgeries are also done here. Needless to say , our success rates match the global standards.
Treatments of movement disorders like Parkinsonism are done predominantly by using special drugs and this is very effective in most cases. But many patients do also develop side-effects caused by usage of the drugs especially after 5-6 years of treatment. Such patients are surgical candidates. The surgical treatment offered for Parkinsonism is Sub Thalamic Nucleus (STN) Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS).
Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
The department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery has well qualified surgeons who have undergone extensive training in India and abroad in well-renowned centres. Specialised plastic surgical procedures ranging from correction of birth defects, repair of complex defects following excision of malignancies, soft tissue repairs following trauma, to the entire range of cosmetic surgery are performed at the department.
Full-fledged cosmetic surgical services that include assessment, counseling, diet and nutrition advice are also available in the department.
The department actively coordinates with other departments like Neurosurgery, Surgical Oncology and Orthopedics to manage all soft tissue defects as well as chronic wounds. The plastic surgeons are proficient in microvascular surgery and a large volume of microvascular procedures like replantation of amputated parts and transfer of tissue from one area to another for coverage of soft tissue defects are performed on a routine basis. Major reconstructive procedures, particularly for Head and Neck cancers are also done regularly with results comparable with international standards.
Department of ENT, Head & Neck Surgery
The department of ENT, Head & Neck Surgery at Apollo Specialty Hospital, Chennai, specializes in treating head, neck and skull base tumours. It functions closely with the departments of Neurosurgery, Plastic surgery, Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology and allied specialties to provide the best comprehensive treatment for patients with head & neck tumours. Management strategies are worked out individually for each patient.
Surgical management of benign (non-cancer) and malignant (cancer) lesions of the head and neck, such as composite resection of mouth cancers, total and partial laryngectomy (removal of voice box), voice rehabilitation procedures (voice prosthesis), and surgeries for cancer of the sinuses, salivary gland (Parotidectomy) and hypopharyngeal cancers (upper part of food passage) are being done regularly. After tumour resection, reconstruction is done using a combination of microvascular techniques by the plastic surgeons and osseointegrated implants by the dental surgeons to bring the quality of life of the patients as close to normal as possible.
Tumours arising from the sinuses and ear, because of their location invade the structures that separate the brain from the rest of the head and neck (skull base). In the past, these tumours reaching the base of the skull were considered unapproachable and therefore incurable. Combined efforts of the ENT head & neck surgeons, neurosurgeons and the plastic surgeons have increased the ability to resect these tumours with preservation of function and appearance. Malignant skull base tumours arising from the sinuses, ear, nasopharynx and infratemporal fossa are resected with good results. The Apollo Specialty Hospital, Chennai, is among the few in the country to perform these surgeries. BrainLAB’s image guidance system is used for precise removal of skull base tumours without injury to normal neurovascular structures.
Benign tumours like acoustic neuromas, glomus jugulare tumours and other cerebellopontine angle tumours as well as facial nerve pathologies are operated using otoneurosurgical techniques. Retraction of the normal brain to expose these tumours can produce significant morbidity. The otoneurosurgical techniques reduce or eliminate brain retraction. Intraoperative electrophysiological monitoring of the cranial nerves is carried out to preserve their function.
An exciting advance in the last decade has been the use of the endoscope to remove tumours situated deep in the base of the skull. Skull base tumours like pituitary adenoma, craniopharyngioma and chordoma can be removed through the nostril without a skin incision. Apollo Specialty Hospital has the credit of performing the maximum number of Transnasal endoscopic pituitary surgeries in India. Leakage of fluid from the brain (CSF rhinorrhoea) and herniation of brain into the nose can also be repaired using this technique. Better visibility with this technique has considerably improved tumour removal, reduced hospital stay and minimized postoperative complications. At the Apollo Specialty Hospital, Chennai, this technique has been successfully used since 1995.
