Treatments
Spondylosis
Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD) or Spondylosis is the slow deterioration of the disc between the vertebrae. Mostly it does not need surgery . It is usually managed with anti-inflammatory medication, physiotherapy and exercise. Surgery is recommended when there are debilitating symptoms that interfere with daily life, and when non-surgical treatment has not helped after trying for at least six months.
Slipped Disc
When the inner, softer part of the disc bulges out through a weakness in the outer part of the disc, it is known as prolapsed disc.
Treatments include:
Keyhole surgery – This is also called microdiscectomy spine surgery and is performed when there is a prolapsed disc in the lumbar (lower back) region pressing against a nerve.
Disc replacement – An artificial disc is implanted into the spine mimicking the function of a normal disc which is to carry load and allow movements.
Scoliosis
The spine is normally curved when viewed from the sides and is only seen as a straight column from the front. When the spine shows curvatures from the front it is called scoliosis. Kyphosis is the abnormal forward bending of the spine . If the curvature of the spine is huge , surgical treatment of scoliosis is deployed. Aim of the surgery is to create a well-balanced spine, where the head, shoulders and trunk are centered over the pelvis. Instrumentation is used to reduce the magnitude of the deformity and obtain fusion so that future curve progression is halted.
Spinal Tumors
Spine surgeons at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai use new techniques and technology to reach tumors or treat delicate injuries even in extremely inaccessible areas. High-powered microscopes are used during surgery. Intradural tumors are also removed. In select patients, Total Spondylectomy – removal of the entire vertebra is also performed as a definitive cure.
